  • computer security - malicious incident

    computer security - malicious incident

In December 2021, our firm was the victim of a malicious computer security incident which resulted in a partial loss of confidentiality and a breach of some personal data (dissemination on the darknet of documents exfiltrated from our computer system) in July 2022.

We are truly sorry and we beg you to please excuse us for this incident.

The potential negative consequence for you is the use of your data for fraud, identity theft or other purposes.

Notification of this incident was given to the Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL), the French Data Protection Authority, as required by Article 34 of the European Data Protection Regulation (EDPR).
The legal authorities were also informed.

Pre-existing measures (password access management, implementation of daily backups, antivirus software and regular updates thereof, a secure professional network - vpn, encryption, antispam - ), have been strengthened (audit of the information system, change of passwords, enhancing of password management rules, application of server and workstation session locking strategies, switch to a CLOUD environment, awareness raising session) to minimise the risk and heighten the security level.

Despite these new provisions, we must all be vigilant, in particular since we are confronted by the attempts at computer fraud or phishing that could well arise in the coming weeks.

Here are some of the recommended measures that could be implemented, especially in the given context :
    - The bank statements for your accounts and/or that of the firm must be submitted personally or by means of the "CONFIDENCE RIB" application set up by the Paris Chamber of Notaries.
    - Assure yourself of the identity of your interlocutors before any exchange of information to thwart any identity theft : contact by another channel, by the cross-checking of information, etc.
    - Do not open any unsolicited email or email with an unknown delivery address. Delete it without opening it.
    - Check the characteristics of the e-mail before acting on it : the e-mail address of the sender (not only its title but also its composition: e-mails sent by the firm must come from an e-mail address ending in @paris.notaires.fr), other recipients, subject of the e-mail, types of attachments, etc.
    - Respond only to messages whose content has not raised an alert. Keep an eye out for spelling mistakes, unusual turns of phrase, a strange request from a contact (strong pressure, request for confidential codes, sensitive information, etc.).
    - Only download items from a secure source.
    - Assess the appropriateness of any attachment before opening it, in particular its relevance to the context, the type of file, its extension (.exe; .pdf; etc.).
    - If in doubt, contact with the supposed sender of the email.
    - For telephone calls or SMS messages from unknown numbers, never respond to any requests for personal and/or bank-related information.

We are of course at your disposal for any further information at vpmf-information@paris.notaires.fr.

We apologise for this event and the inconvenience caused.
Once more, please excuse us, and we would like to confirm that we consider the protection of your data to be one of our priorities.
